Biography
Oboist T. Colton Potter, National Merit Scholar, National Youth Orchestra (NYO-USA) 2017 participant and Oberlin Conservatory Dean Scholar, was born in Switzerland, and raised in Indiana and Orlando, Florida, where he graduated a valedictorian of his Timber Creek High School class. While at Timber Creek, Colton served for two years as Drum Major of the Regiment, for four years as principal oboist of the Wind Ensemble and Philharmonic Orchestra, won the concerto competition as well as the Director’s and Outstanding Woodwind Awards, and sang in Concert Choir. Honored by the principal as a “Leader of the Pack,” he was two years a member of the TCHS varsity tennis team, served as Tri-M President, participated in several service clubs/organizations, Math and German Honor Societies, and enjoyed playing piano in the school musicals. An AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Honor Society member, Colton served as principal oboe of the Orange County Public Schools All-County Band or Orchestra for five of the six years he was selected, and as principal oboe of the Florida All-State Band or Orchestra for four of the five years he was selected.
As a member of the 2017 National Youth Orchestra of the United States, Colton performed with NYO-USA in Carnegie Hall under the baton of Marin Alsop, and toured to Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador, performing side-by-side with youth orchestras in Guadalajara, Mexico and Bogotá, Colombia.
Colton attended Interlochen Arts Camp for three summers (as Emerson, Orchestra, and Loomis Scholar) where he relished his personal and musical experiences, including two full summers performing with renowned professional conductors as the principal oboist of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was twice honored with the Maddy Award, Interlochen’s highest recognition. Six years a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, Colton served as principal oboe of the Symphonic Orchestra, and was honored with the Dr. Joseph Wise Award at the completion of his tenure there.
Colton has also been awarded the National Band Association Outstanding Musician Award, the Marine Corps “Semper Fidelis” Award for Musical Excellence and the Foundation for Excellence in Education Arts for Life! Scholarship in Music.
Passionate about music, and its abilities to transcend and unite, Colton intends to pursue a career as a professional orchestral musician and/or conductor. So many wonderful teachers and mentors, as well as his parents, have shaped Colton’s musical and artistic path, and he is so grateful for their investment in and encouragement of him.
